I’d like to begin this message by thanking everyone involved in The Shaw Mind Foundation, especially for authoring and distributing the book “Pulling the Trigger: OCD, Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Related Depression – The definitive survival and recovery approach”.

As I’m writing this message I can safely say that the PTT method has truly changed my outlook on life. I have been a lifelong sufferer of anxiety, panick attacks and intrusive thoughts, and as many others I’ve mostly suffered alone.

My childhood and adolescent experiences with anxiety inhibited me from truly exploring life to its fullest, dealing great damage to my relationships and academic life. If only I’d read about Adam’s story earlier in my life I think much of the hardships I’ve endured could’ve been avoided.

Mental illness, OCD, anxiety and intrusive thoughts etc. are all extremely treatable issues and with the help of psychoeducation (such as the educational aspects presented in the book by Dr Lauren Callaghan) I truly believe that anyone can overcome their mental illness. With the help of your book I’m finally taking the first correct steps towards getting better.

Phenomenal

This book has quite frankly change my life. I have suffered from OCD for 20 years. I have been using the methods in this book now for a couple of months and I am a different person. I used to spend twenty minutes checking the washing machine is off. Now I spend seconds. I used to have to frequently, several times a day ask my husband for reassurance and get him to check appliances and locks a number of times for me, now I ask for none. It’s no walk in the park and YOU have to put in the hard work to get better but this book could change your life. I would say I am about 70% recovered now. The methods in this book are new to me and follows a new, different and actually quite simple approach. I have had therapy before in the past and none of it has helped me more than this book.

AN UPDATE – A couple of months have passed and I would now say I’m 95% cured of OCD.

Insightful, thought provoking and life changing

An extremely well written book. I like the fact that this book focuses on recovery. The first hand account from Adam I feel seemed very brave and honest. As a student studying integrative Psychotherapy I have kept away from CBT methods as I have felt it only scratches the surface. However, this book has changed my mind. It has given me a different perspective and one that I will now pursue. A good solid resource I will use in my studies and practice. Most importantly a very good insightful read !!

Such a useful book on so many levels

Such a useful book on so many levels. So clearly expresses what life can be like living with OCD and related issues and the impact that such problems can have on ones day to day life. That there is such an encouraging and clear story of recovery, well documented and supported with technical explanation by the psychotherapist, is really inspiring. Such a journey that has and will continually have to be travelled. Love the actual feel of the book itself too and the clear layout. The tips and recommendations for action to be taken to improve the lives of those readers whom suffer in the same way will prove invaluable, I am sure.

One of the best books I have read to help me and understand my condition.

I suffer from Anxiety, Panic Attacks and OCD. The following two books listed below are the best I have read so far to help me and understand my condition I have had for over 35 years.

I have had Cognitive behaviour therapy with NHS Scotland in Glasgow on a one to one basis and group session and it was no were near as informative or helpful as these two books.

1) Pulling the Trigger: OCD, Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Related Depression – The Definitive Survival and Recovery Approach by Lauren Callaghan (psychologist) and Adam Shaw

2) Anxiety: Panicking about Panic: by Joshua Fletcher

Cognitive behavioral therapy with NHS Scotland is a SICK joke.
NHS Scotland Staff make a fool of patients with mental health issues. I wish I had the money to go private.

Best OCD self-help guide on the market

This book is a fantastic resource for both people suffering with OCD, Panic Attacks and related Depression and for those working with them. I have read a number of books on this topic including therapist manuals, self-help guides and those written from the perspective of the sufferer, as well as treating many people with OCD over the past decade or so. This book is by far the best that I have read – Lauren explains the development, maintenance and treatment of OCD with a clear common-sense style avoiding unnecessary jargon. The conversational style of the book really brings the topic alive and I think Adam’s story will be instantly relatable to people who are suffering with OCD and the section by Adam’s wife on the family perspective is very helpful. I have already recommended the book to clients that I am working with and will continue to do so. Thanks Lauren and Adam.

The perfect combination of an autobiography and a self help guide.

This book successfully manages to combine the interest of an autobiographical journey through an OCD sufferer’s first hand experience, with the practical help of a running commentary from an OCD specialist. The result of which is a book which draws you in to Adam’s own personal story in it’s own right but also provides a way forward for those facing their own struggles with the disorder.

This really is a book which allows OCD sufferers to know that they are not alone and that a brighter future can be theirs.

Inspiring

Amazing!! The way the book tells Adam’s story with comments from Lauren and then in part two Lauren gives suggestions and exercises to tackle your own ocd, this approach gives a rounded view on the whole journey. Having read Adams story I am now filled with hope and am already taking on board Lauren’s advice. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who suffers from ocd, anxiety and also for their friends and family I have already passed it onto my husband to read.

Useful coping techniques for OCD, anxiety, panic attacks, depression and worry

An excellent book detailing Adam Shaw’s journey from the brink of suicide to recovery from OCD. What’s interesting about this book is that it’s not only a sufferer telling their story but it’s also his clinical psychologist comment on what happened to Adam, the reasons why therapy hadn’t previously worked for him combined with her words about the CBT based therapy she put into place for Adam which led him to recovery. I think the book will be of huge benefit to OCD sufferers and their families but also to those seeking to alleviate panic attacks, anxiety, depression, PTSD and worry. I read it with a friend in mind wanting to learn more about OCD but it has helped me in my own life too with occasional worry and anxiety. I keep remembering the techniques mentioned in the book and do apply them to my own life. It has been helpful knowledge to have for parenting too. When children get anxious and worried about the normal things in life I find myself thinking about some of the coping strategies in this book. I’ll have to buy the upcoming juniors edition!

Excellent!

Having worked with people suffering with anxiety and specifically OCD in the past I have come across a number of books and self-help guides on the subject. Whereas some other books in this field tend to struggle with pacing; I found Pulling the Trigger to flow smoothly and having the book written from the perspective of both the sufferer and the therapist also provides a new level of insight. I would definitely recommend reading or listening!

Great self help book for people with OCD

I downloaded this e-book as part of the free audible trial and I know someone who has OCD. I wanted to see if I thought the book will help them. It helps to hear the sufferer’s story and then the psychologist’s take on things and the simple approach to recovery. I’m definitely going to recommend this book to my friend.
