Inspirational, brave and honest as well as a great read!

‘Stand tall, little girl’ is a ‘must read’ for anyone who is experiencing the misery of anorexia nervosa or knows someone who is. Hope tells the story of her relationship with the illness which included a year spent in hospital, a relapse and her recovery. It pulls no punches, is honest and is very engagingly written. She writes letters to her false friend, Anorexia, and to her loved ones who had to look on while the illness took over. She also examines possible triggers to the onset of the disease but also gives some simple but very useful tips for recovery and coping with life post anorexia. I found the ending incredibly uplifting and I’m sure that the book will be of benefit to anyone in the throes of this terrible disease. It is fitting that the book is dedicated to “all those suffering” and urges them to keep fighting. I am not surprised that this book is published as part of Trigger Press’s ‘Inspirational’ series.

Beautiful and Brave

Hope writes brilliantly and bravely about overcoming and living with anorexia nervosa. She is incredibly honest and brave and the book is very well written, taking you on a journey through her mental illness and how she manages it, with her family I really loved reading this hopeful true story and think it will go some way to battling mental health stigma. Well done and congratulations Hope, its a must read!.

I was quite emotional after finishing this book. We journey with Hope through the pain and the good times, as Hope slowly realises that her Anorexia is not the best friend she thought she was. The writing is informal and enjoyable; a mix of story-telling, diary entries, letters to loved ones, and excerpts of an essay by Hope’s mum. Hope recognises that this battle is hers for life, but has advice and tips for coping strategies. I really hope that any one else with an eating disorder can take strength and inspiration from Hope’s experiences.

Young person fighting the demons of her so called best friend anorexia

A truly inspirational read of a young person fighting the demons of her so called best friend anorexia, how her friend made her feel and eventual realisation that anorexia was not really her friend. A must read for not only someone suffering with anorexia, but for family and friends. Hope is now surviving from her battle with anorexia and shows with help and support how it can be beaten.

A powerful story of struggle and recovery

As someone who has experienced mental health issues but not an eating disorder, I found Hope’s story both eye opening and relatable at the same time. I particularly appreciated Hope’s resolve and the need to develop coping mechanisms for if and when your mental health issues reoccurr. A valuable read for anyone who is experiencing or has experienced mental health issues.

I finished reading this book at the weekend this was one of the most inspirational things I have ever read! Every page was so thought provoking and if that’s the impact it’s had on me I can only imagine how much this is going to help and support so many others. This is a really brave and honest account. Things from this book will stay with me for a long time and I’m just so grateful already for reading it, and I honestly can’t stop thinking about snippets from the book during the days… would definitely recommend this. Well done Hope!

Where do I start – this is a truly inspirational book, a sad but powerful story of how mental health can not only effect an individual but the family and friends surrounding the person living with an eating disorder. I hope this brings encouragement to both girls and boys who are currently affected by an eating disorder. You are not alone!! I would highly recommend this book so people can understand the effects of mental health 🙂

Amazing

Such an inspirational book! Would recommend to to anyone recovering from an eating disorder, or even their family and friends. Hope signed a copy of my book as well as presenting an inspirational talk at my university. Best book I’ve read in a long time!

Brave, personal story

I read Hope’s book in just over 24 hours as I couldn’t put it down. It’s inspiring for any person who experiences mental health issues, as an individual or as a friend or family member of someone who has. It’s written in a friendly, chatty style with humour and lots of sadness. I think Hope is incredibly brave to tell the story, but I’m glad she has as so many other people will take courage from her words.

A real page turner, very insightful

A real page-turner, I was up until 3am without even noticing, powering through the chapters. Hope’s story is a sad but inspirational one. It made me wonder how many girls at school were going through the same thing and I didn’t even realise. She’s made the best of a bad situation by sharing the intimate details of her mental health struggle in the hope that she can help others. I would highly recommend this book to sufferers themselves, friends and family, and anyone who wants to open their mind up to what life is like for people with an eating disorder or mental health problem.

Richard Kirby

One of the mind’s most powerful weapons is its ability to make you perceive yourself in a way that nobody else sees you. To make the reflection in the mirror appear subjectively “huge” when the objective view—in fact the obvious reality—would be the polar opposite.

In “Stand Tall Little Girl”, Hope Virgo tells the story about how “her” Anorexia—her so-called “best friend”—very nearly robbed a teenager of her life, a family of a daughter and sister…

And there was even a time when Hope genuinely believed that would be the best outcome for everyone…

Mental illness can be incredibly cruel; anorexia (nervosa) is a particularly nasty condition that exerts such control that the sufferer readily listens to its voice over and above all others (even if one of those voices belongs to the person who actually brought you into the world).

Hope relates how her “friend” turned her into a compulsive calorie counter and obsessive trainer, who would use any ruse to dispose of food before or even after being ingested. Anorexia filled Hope with pride whenever someone was fooled by her increasingly desperate attempts to mask the effects of her condition—to the extent of hiding weights inside her clothing to artificially increase her weight and BMI when it was time to step on the hospital scales. To the reader it is literally pathetic; to the sufferer it was a triumph…

Hope talks of her descent and gradual recovery in graphic detail. There is no attempt to glamorise a story that could so easily have ended in tragedy; and Hope leaves the reader in no doubt how hard it has been to fight such a persistent confidante. Anorexia does not simply go away; in fact, it’s almost as if it temporarily releases its grip, allows you to take a few tentative steps towards recovery, then returns to remind you how weak you’ve been for now skipping meals, missing a run, or a workout.

As well as control, the other central theme is guilt; albeit often in more lucid hindsight. The loss of her Grandmother feels like a pivotal moment in Hope’s story (and how many of us can relate to missing a chance to say those final words), but even when pieces finally seem to be slotting into place, the spectre of an increasingly unwanted companion still looms large on the horizon.

You don’t need to suffer from any mental health condition to be inspired by Hope Virgo—and her family. The fact is that one in four adults will be affected by mental illness… logically there will be very few who are totally immune (especially indirectly) from the effects and impact of mental health. For those who have been struggling, whether openly or silently, certain aspects of Hope’s symptoms and situation will resonate—perhaps uncomfortably… even unpleasantly. She knows only too well that recovery is unbelievably tough. There will be seemingly insurmountable obstacles to overcome; there will be setbacks, and so much pain and hurt along the way.

But Hope never gave up—and importantly, her family never gave up.

Hope Virgo is an amazing young woman; a survivor. Her story will upset you (as it’s surely meant to), but it will just as surely inspire you too.

Beautifully written

This book is amazing. Its beautifully written, personal and Hope really gives us a factual insight into the emotions of her difficult journey. It’s an emotional read but in a good way. There is hope in this story, a hope that whatever you are battling it can change and it can get better. The journey may never be over but the experiences build a strength that cannot be removed.

better than many of the ED recovery books

Solidly written, better than many of the ED recovery books. Honest and interesting. Nice to read excerpts from her Mother’s perspective. Some triggering details for those who are vulnerable but worth the read. Fairly typical story however – not a life changing read for me, but may be for others wanting hope for a recovery.

Truly inspirational

What a book!!! Anorexia plagues so many females (& males) and I had no idea of how controlling it was for the person suffering. It is such a raw book that absolutely takes the reader on Hope & her families complete journey. Highly recommend, particularly if you know someone who you think/know is suffering. It will really help you understand and would definitely help the individual suffering too.

The book is expertly written, with insights from Hopes family about what it was like for them and Hope, when she was unwell and getting better. Each chapter deals with a specific period of time and Hope is very honest about her recovery journey. It is not smooth and she did relapse a few years ago. Hopes story is one of utmost bravery and triumphing against the odds. She is now an advocate, author and speaker for mental health, runs marathons and has a healthy attitude towards food. I loved reading her inspirational, well written and beautiful story.
